Check the sidewall before you buy. The three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF snowflake mark — real snow and ice grip) marks a tyre that has passed a standardised snow-traction test; M+S is a manufacturer's own claim with no test behind it. Both winter tyres here carry the 3PMSF marking.
There is no UK law requiring winter tyres. For most UK drivers — where cold snaps are short and snow is occasional — a single set of all-season tyres is the usual choice; dedicated winter rubber earns its keep where hard frosts and snow are routine.
